Bulletin Letter from November 6
Homecoming is always a special weekend on campus. But it is even more special this year here at Newman. We welcome all alumni who are visiting for the weekend and hope that your visit to Newman may bring back special memories of your time on campus and as part of the Newman community.
We have a very special alum visiting our community this weekend. Fr. Mark Padrez, OP, the Provincial of the Western Dominican Province (and therefore the Superior of our Dominican Friars) is here making his canonical visitation of the Dominican Community. Fr. Mark is a 1987 graduate of the University of Arizona and was quite involved in the Newman Center during his tenure on Campus. He entered the Order upon completing his degree. As a Dominican he has served in both parish and campus ministry, and has spent the last 10 years working in “internal ministry” or administration – serving first as vocations director, then as vicar provincial and finally as Provincial. We are blessed to have him here this weekend and most of you will have the joy of hearing him preach.
I said “most” because we have another special guest at the 5 PM Mass. Bishop Kicanas will be here to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for 12 Newmanites. Congratulations to those receiving this special sacrament! It is always a pleasure to have the Bishop visit with us and I am always grateful for his ongoing support of the ministries of the Newman Center.
I think most of you know that I will be away from Tuesday, November 8 until Tuesday, November 15. I am taking a little break to celebrate my birthday (the big 5-0) on the big Five-O with my Dominican classmates, Fr. Carl Schlichte and Fr. Steve Maekawa. I will be writing my letter for next weekend’s bulletin from the Beach on the North Shore.
Aloha and Mahalo,
