This Week at Newman for September 2
Hello everyone, and congrats to the football team on their season opening win, even though it was a close one! I hope all of you are enjoying your Labor Day Weekend, and especially the day off tomorrow.
Events this Week:
Labor Day – Newman Center Closed
Monday, September 3
For Labor Day, the Newman Center will be closed all day on Monday, September 3rd. There will be no Daily Mass that day.
Wednesday Student Mass and Adoration
Wednesdays at 7:30 PM
Every Wednesday night we invite all students to our Wednesday Student Mass! At 7:30, we begin with a time of praise and worship to prepare our hearts as we transition into Mass. The Mass is unique since it features a discussion homily. This week will be unique since we will have a time of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after the Mass, which we will have every first Wednesday of the month!
St. Albert Science, Faith, and Spirituality Sessions
Thursday, September 6 at 7:30 PM
We invite students, faculty, and anyone else interested for a time to engage current issues where faith, science, and spirituality share a common ground. This week will be a discussion session on “The Church on Science and Faith – A Brief Summary and Discussion with UA Scientists of Faith.”
Kino Border Initiative Trip
Friday, September 7 at 5:45 PM and Saturday, September 8 at 5 AM
Kino Border Initiative is a Jesuit run organization just south of the Mexico-US border in Nogales, Arizona/Sonora that serves recently deported migrants with two meals a day for 15 days. On certain days they also provide basic first aid and clothing to those in need. The Newman Center helps with this organization by preparing and serving a breakfast for the migrants. On Friday, anyone can come to help prepare food after the 5:15 PM Daily Mass until 7:30 PM. On Saturday, those traveling meet in the kitchen to cook, travel to Nogales, Mexico to serve the food (you need a passport), and return to the Newman Center around 1 or 2 PM. There are only about 5 spots available per trip, so if you are interested in helping this Saturday, email Yemil Andrade at email@example.com.
Football Game Tailgate Party
Saturday, September 8 at 3:30 PM
Come to the Newman Center for hamburgers, hot dogs, and a good time before our football team takes on Oklahoma State. The Newman Center is the place to get amped for the game!
Sunday, September 9 at 6 AM
Not far from the University, this shelter provides men with a place to stay for a given amount of time, hot meals and resources to help them find employment. The second Sunday of every month a group of volunteers from the Newman center buys food, prepares breakfast and serves it to the men. Hearing the stories of these men is inspiring and a wonderful opportunity to make authentic human connections. For more information contact Ryan Nussbaum at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Fight for Justice: Social Justice Dinner and Info Night
Sunday, September 9 at 6 PM
Come for a free dinner and learn about the different Social Justice Ministries at the Newman Center!
Tuesdays at 7 PM
We invite anyone who is interested in becoming Catholic and anyone who is not Catholic but interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. We will meet in the Newman Center library. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Donald at email@example.com.
Serve at Casa Maria Catholic Worker House
Thursdays at 8:15 AM
Casa Maria is a Catholic Worker House that serves the poor and homeless in South Tucson. Only a few miles away, this community of workers provides members of the Newman Center with the opportunity to serve and grow in understanding of the mission of the Catholic Workers. If interested, meet us at the Newman Center at 8:15 AM on Mondays and Thursdays. If you have any questions, contact Sr. Angelica at firstname.lastname@example.org.
