Letter From the Pastor October 6
Welcome to October! It is a wonderful month. Today (Friday) is the Feast of St. Francis, one of the most popular and best known Saints that the Church venerates. And on THIS Feast of St. Francis, there has arisen another Francis in our time who is, like his medieval namesake, listening deeply to a call the call of God to “build the Church.” Pope Francis today is visiting the tomb and shrine of the Saint whose name he borrowed. We can expect great fruits to emerge from the visit stand by for more later.
October is also observed in the US Church as Respect Life Month. As we have for the last several years, here at the Newman Center, we will observe this important month with prayer. Beginning this Wednesday evening. we will host Adoration from after the 7:30 PM Mass until Thursday afternoon’s Evening Prayer. Throughout Wednesday night and all day Thursday members of the community are invited to sit in adoration and prayer with the specific intention of greater respect for human life in our world. This will take place for the next four weeks.
October is also observed by Catholics as the Month of the Rosary. We will join communal prayer of the Rosary to our Adoration for Life. Each Wednesday night and Thursday, we will pray a full 20 decade rosary as part of our Prayers for Life. We will pray the Joyful Mysteries at midnight, the Luminous Mysteries at 3:00 AM, the Sorrowful Mysteries at 6:00 AM, and the Glorious Mysteries at 9:00 AM.
We welcome Fr. Steve Maekawa to our community today. Besides being the Vocations Director of the Province, he is also my classmate and dear friend and it is a joy to have him with us.
