Theology on Tap
Tuesday, March 10 at 6:30 pm at O’Malley’s on 4th Ave., Sr. Angelica will talk about her trip on the El Camino de Compostela, also known as “The Way of St. James”, in Spain this past fall. The presentation will include a discussion of the pilgrim’s journey of faith which includes adventure and mystery, wonder and spiritual quest.
Do you want to learn more about the Bible? Why not begin at the beginning? The San Martin de Porres Chapter of the Dominican Laity is offering a study on the Book of Genesis. We will meet in the Newman Center classroom at 2:00 PM on Saturdays, beginning March 7. At the first session, Sr. Angelica will present an introduction of Genesis. All are welcome. Please bring your Bible.
Br. Cody will be giving a presentation on Lent, Liturgy, and Prayer on Saturday, March 7 at 6 pm in Green Hall. Refreshments will be provided.
Spring Break Opportunity-Poverello House
Poverello House is a place where homeless men are able to receive a meal, shower, watch T.V., and rest for the day. Volunteers are needed to help in the garden and paint. If you are interested in helping for a day or two on March 16, 17, or 18 contact Sister Angelica by March 9.
ENDOW is a Catholic organization that helps women discover their God-given dignity through the richness and authenticity of Catholic teaching. Michele Grantham, nurse and certified educator, will give five sessions which will focus on what it means to be a woman created in God’s image. The presentation includes studies from Humanae Vitae and Redemptoris Mater. The sessions will be on Thursdays beginning March 5, 12, 19, 26, and April 9 at 3:30 PM. Holy Week Retreat
Beginning the evening of Friday, March 27 to midday on Sunday, March 29 in Pinetop, Arizona. The retreat will focus on the Triduum through readings and silence to prepare for Holy Week. Sign up sheets will be available after Masses this weekend. Cost is $45, but space is limited.
Sustaining Board Scholarship
The Newman Sustaining Board Scholarship application is now available for completion by anyone who wants to apply for one of two $5,000 scholarships for next year. This is the first time the application has been online and it can only be completed online this year. The deadline for applications is March 13th.
Sustaining Board Dinner
The Sustaining Board will serve a wonderful meal in Green Hall on Sunday, March 1 at 6:00 PM. Come eat, drink, and be merry! All students are invited! The meal is free of charge and a great opportunity to fellowship with other Newman students.
Kino Border Initiative
The Newman Center provides meals to the Kino Border Initiative, a bi-national ministry in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico that supports migrants who have been recently deported from the United States. Recently, Pope Francis wrote a letter to Kino volunteers, applauding them for their work on behalf of migrants. We are in need of volunteers to travel to Nogales to serve meals to the migrants on April 4, April 18 and May 2. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Casey.
Primavera Men’s Shelter
We are still in need of volunteers for upcoming trips to Primavera Men’s Shelter. If you are not familiar, we meet at the Newman Center at 4AM to prepare breakfast for the Primavera Men’s Shelter here in Tucson and usually return by 6:30AM. The next dates for Primavera are March 8, April 12; and May 10. Please contact Andy or call him at (956) 458-7588 if you are interested in volunteering.
Fr. Albert Felice-Pace, O.P. Retirement
At the end of June, Fr. Albert Felice-Pace, O.P. will be retiring after 55 years of service. Fr. Albert served as Director of St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center from 1993-2003. At his current and final post at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, they will be throwing a retirement party for him on April 18.
