Emmaus

The Retreat That Lasts All Semester

7 PM on Wednesday nights

The evening models itself after the story of Emmaus in Luke 24.  After the death of Jesus in Jerusalem, two disciples were walking along the road to the town called Emmaus when they encountered a man they did not recognize.  The two disciples were disappointed that Jesus had died, but this person walked with them and shared with them what was referred to Jesus in the scriptures.  Once they reached Emmaus and the two disciples invited him to stay the night, they recognized the man as Jesus in the breaking of the bread.  The two disciples were so filled with joy that they ran back to Jerusalem, eager to share the news that Jesus is alive.

In the same way as the two disciples, Emmaus at the Newman Center guides everyone who comes on the journey of seeing Christ in the scriptures, then in the breaking of the bread – the Eucharist – during the Candlelight Mass.  It is in the Eucharist that we see Jesus and know that He is risen, bringing all of the love that He is.

On Wednesday nights, Emmaus begins with praise and worship music led by our worship band.  Then either a student or guest speaker give a reflection, which usually either leads into small group sharing or personal reflection.  The entire evening’s theme is centered around that day’s Gospel, as the evening builds and transitions into the Candlelight Mass at 8 PM after a time of reflective worship.  The Candlelight Mass is unique because it features a discussion homily, where you can contribute how the Spirit moved in you during the scripture readings and ask questions.  Afterwards, we invite you to have snacks in the lobby for a time of fellowship and hanging out.

If you’re looking for a mid-week retreat and a time to grow in your relationship with God, come to Emmaus on Wednesday nights!
