Dear Friends,

It has been a very busy week for the Dominican Community as a number of guests have come and gone. Of course, last weekend, we were blessed to have the novice community and their Novice Master, Fr. Anthony Rosevear. It was truly a blessed visit and we enjoyed hosting them for the 5 days they stayed in Tucson. No sooner had they left than the Provincial of the Southern Dominican Province, Fr. Chris Eggleton, arrived to have a Provincial Visitation with Fr. Bob Burns, who lives in our community but remains a member of the Southern Province. Again, we enjoyed Fr. Chris’ presence and he enjoyed his time in our community. He shared with me that he had not laughed in a long time the way he did at the dinner table with our community. That was a beautiful affirmation of our community life and a real air of contentment that exists among the Dominicans here. As Fr. Chris leaves today (Friday) we are blessed to welcome Sr. Carolyn Marie Monahan who is here to make a Congregational Visitation of the Sisters’ community. She will be here through the weekend.

Lent begins Wednesday. I want to say a huge thank you to all those who participated in the Lenten Reflection Booklet project. It will be ready to pick up on Wednesday.

Peace,

Dear friends,

We are happy to welcome the novices of the Western Dominican Province for their annual visit to Tucson. Along with Fr. Anthony Rosevear, our Novice Master, they will be here until Tuesday.

Their visits to the various communities serve two purposes: it gets them out of the routine of life in the novitiate community for a couple of weeks, and it gives them a chance to take a closer look at the diversity of ministries that might be available to them in the future should they opt to continue their formation in the Order. That second purpose is an invaluable part of their discernment process. The novitiate is a one year period of intense discernment, and men who are accepted to the novitiate need as much information as possible to help them make a good decision about continuing to the next steps in the formation process.

Please pray for these men and the others who are in formation in our province. Tucson is a great ministry to be assigned to as a Dominican and, who knows, you could see one of them again in the future.

The back of the bulletin contains a very important letter from the Bishop. Please take time to read it.

Peace,

Hello, I hope this last week was a time of God working in your life! Also, I offer my congratulations to all of the New York Giants fans on their Super Bowl win and condolences to the Patriots fans. I hope all of you have a great week, and don’t forget to continue to pray for our entire community.

Events This Week:

“You Have a Right to What?”
Thursday, February 9 at 7 PM
This week is the final part of Fr. Bart’s three part adult formation series on the discussion of two very important contemporary social (moral) issues: “marriage equality” and “reproductive rights.” He is approaching both subjects from the standpoint of rights that are claimed in our culture today. In the first of the three sessions (Jan 26), Fr. Bart looked at the historical, philosophical and theological question: “Where do rights come from?” Last week’s session dealt with “Marriage Equality,” and this week’s will deal with “Reproductive Rights.” If you intend on attending this week’s session, the first session was the foundation for the other two discussions, so you first need to watch the session online. If you reply to this email I can send you the link. The discussions last from 7 PM to 8:30 PM.

Valentine’s Bash
Friday, February 10 at 7 PM
We invite all students this Friday for a movie, a heart-shaped dessert walk, and the chance to make Valentines cards. This event is BYOD – Bring Your Own Dessert (not needed, but if you want to bring one (Any good cooks? Any favorite desserts from the store?) it would help). Bring a friend as well!

Weekly Events:

Serve at Casa Maria Catholic Worker House
Mondays and Thursdays at 8:15 AM
Casa Maria is a Catholic Worker House that serves the poor and homeless in South Tucson. Only a few miles away, this community of workers provides members of the Newman Center with the opportunity to serve and grow in understanding of the mission of the Catholic Workers. If interested, meet us at the Newman Center at 8:15 AM on Mondays and Thursdays. If you have any questions, contact Matt Campbell at mlcampbe@email.arizona.edu.

Thinking with the Popes: “Introduction to Christianity”
Mondays at 7 PM
Join other Graduate students as they study “Introduction to Christianity” by Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI in a group led by Fr. Jacek Buda, O.P. Come if you are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith!

Women’s Faith Sharing Night
Tuesdays at 7 PM
Join Sr. Elizabeth and other women for a scripture-based time of support, discussion, and reflection of topics focused on women’s issues in the Wildcat Lounge. This semester, they will be reading Catholic Spirituality and Prayer in the Secular City by Fr. Bob Burns, O.P., a priest in residence at the Newman Center and a professor in Religious Studies at the U of A. All female student and permanent community members are welcome to come and grow together in our understanding of our Christian faith and our part in it.

Coffee with St. Mark
Wednesdays at 8 AM
Join Fr. Bart in a weekly Bible study focused on the Gospel of St. Mark! It is open to everyone, both permanent community and students. Coffee will be provided.

Emmaus
Wednesdays at 7 PM
Emmaus is our “mid-week retreat that lasts all semester,” and it’s named after the town in Luke 24 that two disciples were traveling towards when they encountered a stranger. As they were walking with him, he revealed scripture to them, and in the breaking of the bread, they recognized him as the risen Jesus. Emmaus begins with praise and worship, and then we have either a student or guest speaker. This week, David Mares will be speaking on the topic of Scripture in the Christian Life as we continue our journey of conversion. We usually have time for reflection and then more worship that transitions us into the Candlelight Mass at 8 PM. The Candlelight Mass is unique since it features a discussion homily, where everyone has a chance to share on the Gospel. Come and worship with us!

Thinking with the Popes: “Redeemer of Man”
Thursdays at 4 PM
Join other Undergraduate students as they study “Redeemer of Man (Redemptor Hominis)” by Pope John Paul II in a group led by Fr. Jacek Buda, O.P. Come if you are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith!
